A 600-year-old mummy, which was stolen from Peru 26 years ago, was returned to Peru. The mummified body, originally found near the Alpamayo Mountain in Peru's Ancash region, was smuggled out of Peru in 1986. The mummy was recently given to a Munich-based magazine, which then summoned German authorities, Andina reported. The remains were returned from Germany thanks to efforts by Peruvian Embassy in Germany, and the cooperation of the German authorities, the Peru’s Foreign Ministry said. The ministry said experts at the Museum of Ethnology in Munich found that the mummy had come from Peru, and arranged for its return. In a statement the Peruvian government said it appreciated the high level of cooperation from German authorities, who had made the return possible. The mummy was formally handed back to Peruvian authorities during President Ollanta Humala’s visit to Germany.
