Madre de Dios: Peru declares health emergency


A health emergency was declared on Sunday in the region of Madre de Dios in southeastern Peru, an area of tropical Amazon rainforests.

Local authorities made the decision due to a sharp increase in malaria, dengue fever and other tropical diseases.

113,000 people live in the region of Madre de Dios, an area filled with mines and mineral extraction operations.

In addition the Manu National Park is located in the area, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
